Here are the proposed daily routes for the fourth leg. Each day has been planned around three things: 1. Avoiding big cities and highways with heavy traffic (especially trucks!), 2. About 350 miles or seven driving hours, whichever is less and 3. Stops at places of interest or where friends and acquaintances can join with me. I welcome input from anyone following the blog who has local knowledge and can suggest improvements.
DAY TWENTY ONE – Assuming a departure date of May 5, 2021 I plan to depart Colorado Springs and drive to Cortez, CO. This is familiar ground to me as I have been on all of these roads many times. The only difference is that this time I will be earlier in the season than I have ever been. That is the main concern I have so I will be very focused on the weather and may adjust the departure accordingly. If it is nice, this will be a fun day!
DAY TWENTY TWO– May 6, Cortez to Cedar City, UT – This will be another day of spectacular beauty. The first half of the day will take me through the Monument Valley where so many westerns have been filmed and to the head of Lake Powell at Page AZ. From here the exotic red rock formations dominate the view until the Kaibab area where vegetation reappears and the beauty of Zion and Cedar Breaks flank my way to the end.
DAY TWENTY THREE – May 7, Cedar City to Beatty, NV – This looks to be a long day of nothing but empty. I traverse the southern edge of the Great Basin and then the Nevada Desert. I won’t be far from Area 51 or the Alien Research Center and ET signs. I am a bit anxious in my tiny, old car as it will only require a small ship to beam me up and examine me. I hope they don’t think I represent the typical American! I stop in Beatty since it has the only accommodations within 75 miles and I want to cross Death Valley in the early day cool temps.
DAY TWENTY FOUR –May 8, Beatty to Furnace Creek to Goleta, CA – Today is a day of extremes from the harsh desert, including the lowest elevation town in the USA, to the lush Pacific coast. Much like yesterday, the first half will be flat, hot desert and will pass right by Willow Springs Raceway, but once I cross the Antelope Valley, things get greener and the roads more interesting to drive. I will go through Ojai which I have always wanted to see and pass by classy Santa Barbara to a more affordable Goleta for the night.
DAY TWENTY FIVE – May 9, Goleta to Jalama Beach to Santa Cruz, CA – A bit of explanation is needed here. The real Southwestern most point is Point Arguello which is located deep within Vandenberg Air Force Base, a place I am not permitted to access. Thus, I revert to the “reachable by public road” concept and the closest place to Point Arguello reachable by public road is Jalama Beach Road. To get there I will go to Lompoc and then on county roads to the beach. From here I retrace my route to Lompoc then head north on Highway 1 to Cayucos where I turn inland unless the slide that took out the road near Carmel has been repaired. I’d prefer to stay on the Pacific Coast Highway so I will be watching and hoping it is a viable option.
